Do Your Dogs Gobble Up Their Food At Lightning Speed?

January 1st, 2009 at 04:15am Under Dog News

Ah… Scruffy does… everytime!

It really does not matter if the food are leftovers in the trash or fresh food in their doggie bowl. All food, clean or not, is still food and feast to your dog and they will gobble everything up in seconds!

This is actually a natural thing for you dog. This stems from the dog’s ancestors in the wild. Back in the wild, food is scarce and dogs of the wild has to quickly eat up as much as possible as long as there is food. They knew that if they don’t, the food would probably be gone in the wild. This behavioral characteristic is still dominant in many dogs today.

Dogs are really evolution from their ancestor, the wolf. Do you know that wolves are extremely functional eaters and he can devour as much as 35 to 40 pounds of meat in just one sitting? Thus the same also holds true for ancient dogs. Not knowing when their next meal is going to be as they have to hunt for preys which may or may not be found, it is important for them to eat as much as possible to ensure their own survival. They do not eat to get stuffed!

Another important factor that helped dogs survive is that they hunt in packs and were quite efficient by working together as a team. Because they hunted together, the pack would share the killing with each other so that all of the dogs were able to eat. However, not every dog was able to get his fill because there is a rank system and the leaders always ate first. They also devoured the biggest pieces of meat, while the lesser ranked pack members ended up with just the leftovers.

Humans and dogs have only been living together for approximately 10,000 years. Because of the short time span it is little wonder that how old habits of evolution could still exist in today’s domesticated pet dog. Even though you are feeding your dogs on a regular basis, with no competition and fear of having his food eaten, there are still times when that hardwired urge to gobble up food as fast as possible will kick in.

How To Manage Your Attention-Seeking Puppies? Here’s How Easy…

December 29th, 2008 at 04:13am Under Puppy Bow WOw

Artois Puppy, 3 months old.
Image via Wikipedia

I sure do remember when I first got Scruffy… he was a cute little puppy. But also sometimes a adorable bugger who keeps clambering for attention. Well, puppies love attention, constantly need to be attended to. Else they cry for it and when they get the attention from you, they will try all means to keep that attention for as long as possible. So how can you manage your attention seeking puppies?

First we must understand that to puppies any attention is better than no attention. So, be careful! Essentially your puppy probably does not care if the attention that is given to him is due to something positive or negative.

Case in point is that when you are eating and your puppy keeps jumping onto you or nudge you or whined, most people tend to correct the puppy by yelling or pushing him away. This is actually encouraging him and he just gets more excited and continues to do what he is doing as he is getting your attention and you are responding to him! To him, whatever that he is doing is working as you actually responded to him by looking at him, paying attention to him. This is motivating him and gets him going and doing the same thing again to invoke the same attention from you.

Similarly, when your puppy do something wrong like going off with your key chain or shoe, the immediate response for you is just to stop whatever that you are doing and start to go after him. When you chase him around, to him you are either playing with him or you wants whatever he is having. Thus he will keep on running until you stop or he gets tired of playing.

Thus, to a puppy, even a smile to him is attention. He views a smile as an acknowledgment that what he is doing is right. puppies do not think like humans, they think that you are like them and thus when they sense that you are excited ( positive or negative ), they also get excited and think that you are following whatever they are doing and hence encouraging them to continue.

The fact that you are upset with your puppy’s action does not represent anything to him. His reaction is based on your body contact and excitement. Even if you yell at him and then push him hard, he will most likely stop and walk away. However, the only thing that you have accomplished is scaring him. But if you know how, it is possible to train your puppy without having to establish fear in them.

How do you start? First, you should show your puppy that the way for him to get your attention is through positive behavior! Well, the best way to do so is to go to him when he is calm and resting or chewing his toy. Just approach him slowly and give him a gentle pat or a soft belly rub while praising him warmly and gently. By doing so, you can be sure that he will realize that being calm and quiet is the sure way to get the attention and love he wants. When you re-enforce this by repetition, you can be sure that he will be repeating his behavior to get your attention!

What Dog Training Device Is Good? : Dog Head Halter

June 29th, 2008 at 02:02pm Under Dog News

Here’s some interesting news around the world about dogs :

-
I have been training Scruffy with nothing more than just treats and a leash. Now, in the market we have a myriad of devices to choose from. Let’s see what are available :

Dog Head Halter This is a dog training device that is often thought to be a muzzle. Unlike a muzzle, the dog can do whatever it wants in a normal situation as it will be loosely wrapped around the dog’s neck and mouth. But if the dog shows signs of aggression, the dog trainer can immediately pull on the leash to tighten the halter to shut the dog’s mouth.

This way, the dog will learn when its behavior is not desired when its mouth is tightened.

Scruffy Learns New Trick Today!

June 25th, 2008 at 02:02pm Under Dog News

Today Scruffy had a lot of fun when a friend visited. He was just so excited. He pranced around like a pony and attempted a lick or two at my friend.

He was hyper for the whole time the friend was here. And when he left, Scruffy was completely zonked out… he fell into a deep sleep.. he did not even know that a cockroach flew into the house… haha… that tired!

-
Who says an old dog cannot be trained?!

Today I taught Scruffy a new trick! And he got it ( after several hours of coaxing and praising! )

Not amazing trick but an extension of what he already knows - to crawl along the floor.

I had to crawl with him practically to get him to understand what I meant. But it was fun and Scruffy definitely enjoyed it! Cos he got a few yummy treats! He’s probably drooling for more!

Do you have a cool trick that you taught your dog? How did you teach him and how long did you take to train your dog to do the trick?

Is Your Dog Smarter Than You?

June 21st, 2008 at 02:02pm Under Dog News

Nothing to do at home? Teach a new trick to your dog then. Here’s a fun one:
Ask him to stay and then put a piece of cookie on his nose. Then wait for a few seconds and give command for him to eat and he will throw the cookie up and snap it up! Gradually train him to stay longer with the cookie on his nose…. Scruffy love this game. But he can be quite impatient in waiting for my command… the smell on his nose is just too tempting! :)
-
I think Scruffy thinks so. He has a coy way about getting his way with everything. How smart is your dog? I have friend who claims that her dog is very stupid. She cannot seem to be able to teach the dog any tricks. All the dog does is just act cute, sleep and eat. Sometimes I thought to myself… maybe that dog is the smartest! Just act cute and you get away with everything!

How smart is your dog? Share with me the smartest thing that you dog did…

Dogs Are So Lucky Now!

June 17th, 2008 at 02:02pm Under Dog News

Dog-worthy news to read :

-
Dogs are so lucky! And Scruffy agrees… “Wooooof”!

We are spoilt for choices when it comes to getting stuff for our dogs. Walk into any pet shop and immediately I will get bombarded with many choices.

I wanted to buy a toy for Scruffy and boy… I was lost in the midst of the choices. I spent like 2 hours there trying to decide what to buy for Scruffy.

What is your favorite toy for your dog? And what is your dog’s favorite? Share them here! Who knows, you might help a fellow dog lover find a new toy!
